Cover photograph (Copyright © 2008, American Society for Microbiology. All Rights Reserved.):Detail of an 8-h Enterococcus faecalis biofilm microcolony cultured on a submerged cellulose membrane (40,000× magnification). A common commensal member of the human gut microflora, E. faecalis is increasingly important as an opportunistic pathogen, as well as a reservoir of antimicrobial resistance genes that can be transferred to the larger bacterial community. There is relatively little known about the role of biofilm formation in these processes. In this pseudocolor low-voltage field emission scanning electron micrograph, the extracellular matrix components have been stabilized with a cationic dye during fixation.
