All Rights Reserved.): The striking visual difference between a healthy specimen of Daphnia dentifera (top panel, left) and one infected by a red-pigmented bacterium (right) results in preferential feeding on infected individuals by planktivorous fish. Electron microscopy reveals dense growth of the pathogen and its spiral shape (bottom panel) that was initially described over 100 years ago by Elya Methnikoff. Molecular phylogenetic analyses identify the bacterium, “Spirobacillus cienkowskii,” as a deeply divergent member of the Deltaproteobacteria.
