About the Cover

Cover photograph (Copyright © 2008, American Society for Microbiology. Electron microscopy reveals dense growth of the pathogen and its spiral shape (bottom panel) that was initially described over 100 years ago by Elya Methnikoff. Molecular phylogenetic analyses identify the bacterium, “Spirobacillus cienkowskii,” as a deeply divergent member of the Deltaproteobacteria.
