This behavior is for removing their blood-sucking exoparasites, macaque lice (Pedicinus obtusus). Fukatsu et al. demonstrated that the macaque louse harbors a novel bacterial endosymbiont, “Candidatus Puchtella pedicinophila,” in a specific region of the gut epithelium and ovaries.
