Cover photograph (Copyright © 2009, American Society for Microbiology. All Rights Reserved.): A confocal laser scanning microscope image of a coaggregate containing rosettes of Sphingomonas natatoria 2.1 (expressing green fluorescent protein; green cells) and tetrads of Micrococcus luteus 2.13 (stained with Syto-59; red-orange cells). These two species of freshwater bacteria coaggregate (specifically recognize and adhere to one another) when mixed together in filter-sterilized water. This interaction is mediated by lectin-like adhesins on S. natatoria 2.1 cells and complementary polysaccharide receptors on M. luteus 2.13 cells. (See related article on page 3987.)
