  • a All NaCl and CaCl2 values are final concentrations (mM) in M-VAN medium. All strains were grown aerobically at 30°C with pyruvate as the substrate. No growth of any strain occurred at a NaCl concentration of 200 mM or lower or at a CaCl2 concentration of 1,100 mM or higher. The growth of all strains at 500 mM CaCl2 was the same as that at 600 mM CaCl2.

  • b Optical densities at 540 nm (OD540) were measured as the mean for triplicate cultures. Growth scoring for NaCl was as follows: +++, a change in the OD540 (ΔOD540) of >0.27; ++, ΔOD540 of 0.15 to 0.27; +, ΔOD540 of 0.03 to 0.14; −, ΔOD540 of <0.03.
